MCU Catch-Up (Part 2)

Marvel’s latest blockbuster “Captain America: Civil War” opened in theaters this weekend and intertwined multiple Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) stories. The plot brings back the usual Avengers gang (minus Thor and the Hulk) while introducing new members Black Panther, Ant Man, and Spiderman.

Because the conglomeration of these stories can be a bit confusing, staff writer Heather Clark and guest writer Lily O’Connor have written summaries of every Marvel movie leading up to “Civil War” in chronological order. “The Pulse” will be posting these summaries over the next couple of days to help refresh your mind before seeing “Civil War”, or to help you connect missing links you hadn’t caught after seeing the movie for the third time.

After a fight, the team discovers Loki is planning to lead an army of aliens called the Chitauri to take over Earth. Loki manages to break free during an attack on the helicarrier which causes the Hulk to appear and Thor to be thrown out of the ship. Natasha and Clint fight and she hits him in the head, causing Loki’s mind control to break. Together with the help of Steve and Tony, they realize that Loki is planning on using Stark Tower to power the portal and race to New York. Loki has already created the portal when they arrive, and they are forced to battle the aliens. S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to send a nuclear missile into the city to destroy the aliens, but Tony sends it through the portal and Natasha is able to close the gateway. The aliens are defeated and the team splits up, with Thor returning his brother to Asgard for punishment.

Steve Rogers, who had moved to Washington D.C. after the Battle of New York, is still working for S.H.I.E.L.D. when he is assigned to infiltrate a captured ship. While retaking the ship from pirates, Steve realizes that Natasha Romanoff, on the mission with him, is secretly gathering information from the onboard computer for Fury. When Steve approaches Fury, the director shows him the new Helicarriers being built as part of Project Insight, a new weapon designed to take out threats before they begin. Fury, however, is concerned about the project and asks senior S.H.I.E.L.D. official Alexander Pierce to postpone the project.

After his request, Fury is ambushed on the road by a group led by the Winter Soldier. Fury escapes and hides in Steve’s apartment, but is killed by the Winter Soldier after giving Steve information on Project Insight. Steve and Natasha follow Fury’s directions to Steve’s old army training camp, where they discover an underground bunker filled with supercomputers. When they access the computers, they discover that Hydra was not destroyed after the Red Skull’s death in “The First Avenger” but instead has been infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. ever since.

Returning to D.C., Steve and Natasha ask Steve’s friend Sam Wilson for help, and they are attacked by the Winter Soldier whom Steve recognizes as his best friend Bucky. When S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to take them prisoner, the three are rescued by Agent Maria Hill and taken to a bunker where Fury reveals himself to be still alive. Steve and the others realize that Pierce, the Hydra leader inside S.H.I.E.L.D., is planning to use the Insight Helicarriers to take out threats to his own group. Steve, Natasha and Sam break into S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters and destroy the Helicarriers, although Steve fights Bucky and is thrown into the Potomac. Bucky drags him to safety and then disappears. Afterward, Steve and Sam begin to search for Bucky, with S.H.I.E.L.D. having been completely dismantled.

When defeat is imminent, Odin comes to attempt to renegotiate a peace, but peace is lost. Odin takes Thor, Loki, and their friends back to Asgard, where he then banishes Thor for his ignorance in nearly starting a war. Thor is sent to Midgard (Earth), along with his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, and is immediately hit by a car belonging to scientists studying atmospheric phenomena.

Meanwhile in Asgard, Loki finds out that he is not actually Odin’s son, but instead was taken from Jotunheim, his home planet. His angry outburst sends Odin  into a coma, and Loki takes control of the throne. Back on Earth, without his power or Mjolnir, Thor befriends scientists Jane Foster, Eric Selvig and Darcy Lewis. The Warriors Three and Lady Sif decide to travel to Earth to find Thor, and Loki sends a weapon called the Destroyer after them. In the ensuring battle Thor is wounded and sacrifices himself for the others. This sacrifice allows Mjolnir to return to him and his powers are reinstated. Thor defeats the Destroyer and returns to Asgard to confront his brother. This confrontation leads to the near death of Odin, apparent death of Loki, and destruction of the Bifrost, forcing Thor to remain on Asgard.

FLATLINE #1

Student Actors Needed for Staged Dorm Rooms

In an effort to reduce tour traffic in the residence halls next year, Spring Arbor University (SAU) will be setting up “viewing rooms” for prospective students. But rather than let the rooms be lifeless and empty, SAU is looking for student actors to fill the rooms so prospective students can see a typical room without bothering other students.

Student actors will spend tour days in the staged rooms, doing their homework and acting happy. They will also be required to interact positively with visiting students and parents.

A tour guide said they “hope the new setup will keep the normal students from feeling like animals in a petting zoo during tours.”

“I never know what to do when people come by on tours,” one student said. “Like, I have to stop crying about my schoolwork so I don’t scare people away, and it’s exhausting.”

Other students agree.

“I just want to scroll through Facebook in peace, you know? I feel like I have to be productive when people are looking at me.”

SAU officials are planning on making staged rooms in Alpha 1 and on the 1 West in Gainey and Andrews Hall. Some housing changes may occur as a result, so students are advised to check their emails frequently over the summer.

Auditions for the positions of student actors will be taking place over the next week in the Student Development office. Applicants will be tested on their ability to ignore people snooping through their closets and dresser drawers and on how positively they respond to being interrupted while working on very important papers.

University to Give Cats to Female Students

A pre-graduation press release from Spring Arbor University (SAU) stated the university would start appreciating female students more in 2016 than ever before.

Although International Women’s Day is March 8, two months before the graduation ceremony, SAU is trying to set an example for the rest of the community.

“It is never an inappropriate time to celebrate women,” a representative of the university said.

Faculty and staff scratched their heads for weeks deciding the perfect gift to celebrate the success of their female graduates. Finding a gift that would celebrate the different types of women represented on this campus was not the easiest task, but the faculty of SAU believes they’ve found it: kittens.

“They need something to love and nurture now that they’re officially adults,” the representative said. “We think cats were the way to go.”

However, there were some stipulations for those to receive cats.

“We realize that there are some women more… blessed than those who need cats,” the representative said. “So, those who are moving in the right direction in their lives, by getting married, can expect to receive a Babies-R-Us gift card.”

The news about the gifts brought new excitement and criticism for the graduation ceremony. Cat lovers were ecstatic about their good luck, while some women are questioning the university’s decision.

“Why are only the women getting gifts?” a particularly offended male said. “Why didn’t the guys get anything?”

New SGA President and VP Q&A (extras)

You may have already seen Joey Dearduff (JD) and Alessandra Varelis’s (AV) interview in the current issue of “The Pulse” (go and pick up a copy if you haven’t yet!). Here a couple of extra questions that didn’t make it past the editing and cutting down process.

The Pulse (TP): What are some of the main goals you want to accomplish as president and vice president?

JD: Our slogan for the campaign and what it will be for SGA as a whole next year, is “Believe, belong, beyond.” Those three words encapsulate what we want to continue on campus and what we want to push for even more next year. Believe is Alessandra’s and my rootedness in Christ’s transformative power and the university’s desire to pursue Him, love Him and serve Him. Our belief in that empowers us to belong and to go beyond. What we desire for this campus next year is to belong, to build support among and between communities. Like Alessandra mentioned, empowering the people who feel as though their voice isn’t heard. To let them know that it is heard. So, belonging. Having people on campus know that they’re loved and taking that fellowship and that love we have for each other and having it transcend outside of these boundaries, outside of the Spring Arbor bubble into the world around us. That looks like service and worshipping not just in Chapel, and inviting the community here and going out and loving the community.

sga

TP: Have Ty and Holly given you guys any advice on what to expect?

AV: We’ve talked a lot with them. They’re great and very encouraging. They’ve said if we have any questions we can call, email or text them; even next year, when they’re gone, if we need any help or advice. I’ve met with Holly and she told me the beginning of the year is super busy so make sure we take the summer and plan and think through things, which is helpful because a lot goes on in the beginning of the year.

JD: Ty has been very encouraging but also very real. He mentioned the campaign and how exhausting it would be and how taxing. When I was elected, he pulled me aside and congratulated me and said, “Hey man, just know that when times get rough, and they will get rough, I’ll be here for you.” I’ve been communicating with Steven Hlatky, who was the student body president my freshman year, and we built a relationship my freshman year. Even Ben Frederick here and there a little bit. It’s been really cool how encouraging, how supportive, and how real current and past presidents and vice presidents have been for us.

Roommates Choose Each Others Outfits: Day 5

Three Spring Arbor University (SAU) students decided to let their roommates pick their outfits for this week. Naturally, “The Pulse” is tagging along to see what happens. If you haven’t read the introduction post yet, click here to do so!

Day 5: Double-Teamed

Instead of just one roommate choosing the others, Friday was a day of combined forces. Two roommates teamed up to choose the third’s outfits, combining all three roommate styles.

Bekah

20160415_131310

Today was (finally) the last day of this particular adventure. Today we did things slightly differently. Instead of Bri or Jessica picking my outfit, they did it together. I was thrilled to be back in my favorite black skinny jeans, which was casually paired with a purple t-shirt. I added the cardigan because, well, I’m always cold.

When people ask me about this week, I’m never really sure what to say. There were days where it was fun and I really enjoyed it, and there were days where I was eagerly waiting for Friday. Thursday night, the only thought going through my head was, “I am so over this.” However, I am glad we did it. This experience has encouraged me to start going outside my comfort zone and try new things (when it comes to clothes anyway). I feel much more confident in trusting my friends’ opinions on outfits, even when I’m not so sure about it. Will I do anything like this again? Probably not. That doesn’t mean, however, that I regret the experience. It was really… interesting.

Bri

IMG_3530

I’M DONE, I’M DONE, I’M DONE! But really, this week has been one-of-a-kind and while I have no plans on letting someone else pick my clothes out anytime soon, it really was a good experience.

But more importantly, I FINALLY got to wear my black jeans! Let’s just say, I’ve missed them. As far as the outfit goes, I was pleasantly surprised! I don’t usually wear red, but I really liked the cardigan.

I think my favorite part of the whole experience was getting to see how Bekah and Jess incorporated their own style into what they picked out for me. While they used my clothes, they mixed and matched them in ways that very accurately represented who they are as individuals; and I love this. It reminded me of just how expressive and revealing of one’s personality clothes can be.

Jess

IMG_3477

It’s the final day and I am happy to report, I am wearing leggings. This outfit is the closest representation to what I wear every day. Bri and Bekah both had a part in picking this outfit and all I can say is “thank you.” Originally, they picked out a pair of Bekah’s white flip flops for me to wear, which were a tad small, but I love it with the nude flats. I don’t really have anything negative to report, but I may have to steal Bekah’s cardigan (don’t tell her!)

Overall, this week was not terrible. I will enjoy being able to choose my own outfits again, but combating that with being able to choose my roommate’s outfits really helped. A couple of the outfits weren’t exactly my style. Although, I have to admit, I think my roommates dressed me betterthan I dress myself. I’m glad we had this experience.

Day 4: Dressy

Bekah

IMG_3253

There’s really not too much to report on today (which is probably a good thing). The dress that Jessica picked out for me today was one that I bought, loved and proceeded to wear only three times in almost two years. It was nice to wear something that I really like but never wear. I am sure that I will wear it more often now that I remember how much I like it. My only complaint for today is that I miss pants. Like a lot. I’m excited to see what tomorrow has in store!

Bri

I was really nervous about what Bekah’s idea of dressy would entail. Would I have to wear another dress? Or even worse, heels? Trust me, I look like a baby giraffe trying to walk for the first time when I wear heels and I was hoping – no, praying  Bekah wouldn’t put me in them.

We’ve dressed up all week and quite frankly, I miss my black jeans. But when Bekah picked this black skirt, striped shirt and flats – an outfit that isn’t that dressy, but enough to qualify for today – I was happy. Plus, what’s  better than medicine when you’re not feeling well? A really cute outfit and just in case you haven’t already gathered that I really like this outfit, let me make myself clear:  I REALLY like this outfit.
Will I wear this again? Absolutely.
Jess
IMG_3425
Last night when Bri picked my outfit she asked if I had anything to do today. I said, “I have an eye appointment,” to which she responded, “I hope your eye doctor is hot!” When I got back this morning I told her my eye doctor was not hot, he was old. The remainder of my day was spent in my room, aside from the trip to Ada’s Kitchen for lunch. But it’s not a bad outfit to lounge around and do homework in (or procrastinate and watch Grey’s). The skirt is another piece of clothing I have not worn since August and the shirt belongs to Bri, but I loved this outfit! Probably my favorite so far and a beautiful day for it, much warmer than yesterday. I will say this though, I don’t really enjoy being photographed, so I’m glad there’s only one more day of that.

Day 3:  Your Least Favorite Color

Bekah

IMG_3218

After two days of letting my roommates pick my outfits, I was feeling pretty confident about the rest of the week. That is, however, until Tuesday night rolled around. That is until the topic of least favorite colors came up. It quickly came to light that I do not own a single item of clothing in either orange or yellow. This is for very good reason – orange and yellow do not look good on people with a pasty complexion. This, of course, meant that Bri picked an orange dress. Seriously. She put me in orange. To be fair, in some lighting it looks coral(ish) and orange in other lighting. I love the dress itself, but not the color. If I had this dress in a different color, I’d wear it all the time.

Bri

IMG_3219

If you were to look in my closet, you would see a bunch of green; olive green to be exact. This is because green is the best color known to mankind. You know what you wouldn’t see in my closet? Blue. And do you know why? Because blue is nice in the sky and ocean but not on me.

With that said, today we had to wear our least favorite color and you guessed it, I had to wear blue. As you can see, the dress Jess picked out has flowers on it, so it’s not like it was solid blue. (Thank goodness) Once I woke up and remembered  I had to wear blue, I – well, I guess I got a little blue myself. But then, Jess dropped the real bomb. She wanted me to wear my hair up.

The only time I wear my hair up is when I’m in my room wearing my favorite camp sweatpants and an over-sized t-shirt. I’ve always felt more comfortable with my hair down. I did, however, put it up and it was weird. Not only did I feel super exposed, but I realized that I care way too much about what people think of me. Who cares if I wear my hair up? No one, except me. After finally getting over myself, I actually started to like the freedom having my hair up gave me. For example, the wind had nothing on me today. No more awkward wind comb over for me!

Overall, I didn’t hate the outfit and while I probably won’t wear my hair up again for a while, it reminded me that it is a possibility if I ever want to. One thing that didn’t change, however, was my dislike for blue.

Jess

IMG_3396

So, when Bri brought up the idea of wearing our least favorite color my initial thought was, “Please don’t put me in orange.” And what does Bekah do? Puts me in an orange dress. Now, I don’t hate the color per se, I just don’t like it on me. I think it washes me out. Also, my legs have not seen the light of day in about 6 months. Not only are they pale, it’s not quite bare leg weather. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, my disdain toward orange is a little less. I also love the style of the dress and the pattern is really pretty, as opposed to being solid orange. It was really soft and comfy too. And while I don’t like myself in orange, a lot of people seemed to. Does that mean I’ll wear orange again anytime soon? Probably not, but I didn’t totally hate it either. Now, I’d like to thank Bekah for putting me in something completely out of my comfort zone.

Day 2: A Casual Look

Bekah

IMG_3140

While yesterday brought the anxiety that comes with wearing something  you wouldn’t typically wear, today I was totally comfortable. Jessica and I have totally different styles. For this reason, I was nervous about her choosing my outfit. Don’t get me wrong, I totally trust her, I was just a little nervous. To my relief, Jessica selected dark blue skinny jeans (which I decided to cuff), a tan t-shirt, and a cozy grey cardigan. I had to laugh as Jessica was looking through my closet because she had to ask where my grey cardigan was. I asked which one, she sheepishly said the one she wore last week. In the harsh fluorescent lighting found in SAU residence halls, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the tan shirt with a darker grey cardigan. However, once I saw the clothes in better lighting, I liked the color match a lot more. Overall, I would say that today was another successful day trusting someone else with me clothing choices.

Bri

IMG_3197

You know that piece of clothing that you never wear? The one that is stuffed in the back corner of your closet and hasn’t seen the light of day in some time, but you swear you’ll either wear it or give it away soon? Yeah? Well, Bekah found said piece of clothing and thanks to this experiment, I’m now wearing it.

While I don’t hate the outfit, because contrary to what Bekah thinks I really don’t, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I love it either. It matches and on anyone else, I’d think it was cute. Really, I would. But on me? I’m just not into the color or style.

I will say, however, that because I haven’t worn it since…high school?, wearing it now has brought back a lot of good memories. For instance, I can clearly remember sitting in class senior year while wearing this shirt, and hearing a buzzing sound only to look up to see my best friend shaving in class. I mean like full on out, has an electric shaver and is going to town on his neck and face. I still don’t understand what was going through his mind in that moment, but the point is that I had forgotten about it until I put this shirt on again.

Overall, while I think the outfit is cute, it’s just not my style. But hey, props to Bekah for being creative and showing me that getting outside of my comfort zone is okay – in fact, it’s really great.

Jessica

FullSizeRender(1)Bri’s inspiration for today was 90’s grunge. I’d say she nailed it. I may have been the only one on campus wearing purple lipstick, but how can you do 90’s grunge without dark lips? I’m glad Bri chose a top knot for my hairstyle because I love them. I would have probably worn yogas, but the green pants are one of my more comfy pairs of jeans, so bless her for choosing those. Unfortunately, I usually always make a mess of myself while eating, so white doesn’t stay white for long. I got sauce from my sesame chicken on the front of Bri’s white t-shirt (sorry, Bri). I loved this outfit, thought, and probably would have picked it out myself.

Bekah

Today’s outfit was picked out by Bri. She chose a striped skirt, white shirt, navy blue jacket and brown oxfords. There are no words to adequately describe the anxiety I felt knowing  she was riffling through my closet (and the closet of our roommate) to put together a “hipster” outfit. This was like some crazy trust exercise. When Bri showed me the pieces she had artfully selected, I thought it was a cute outfit, just not for me. It was finally morning and time to get dressed. I had to admit  the outfit was cute. I spent the morning feeling uncomfortable wearing something  I wouldn’t have picked out on my own. Fortunately, the more the day went on, the more I fell in love with my outfit of the day. By the time the day was over, the only down side I could think of was that the skirt wasn’t mine.

If you haven’t noticed recently, SAU students love their half buns and half buns love SAU students. Seriously, they’re everywhere! Now, I’m not knocking them – believe me, I’m not – but when Jess first suggested  I wear my hair in a half bun, I cringed. I’ve tried them before and due to the lovely forehead I’ve been graced with, they just don’t work. Not to mention they fall out of my hair and end up resembling something like a slightly under-cooked curly fry. You know, the kind where it’s still in a hair tie and therefore has some bun-like dimensions, but most of it has slowly unraveled. Nevertheless, I tried to do as Jess said and put it up, but as you can see from the picture – I’m bunless. Let’s just say it was a slightly undercooked curly fry kind of day.

The outfit, however, I loved right from the get go. It was simple, cute and made me feel BA. Always a good sign, right? The only downside was  the tights and boots were more for a cold winter day and therefore, I was hot – all day. Overall I liked it, though, and will definitely wear it again.

I bought this jumper over the summer and have not worn it since…until now. I wasn’t sure how to rock this particular piece in my wardrobe, but Bekah figured that out. I loved this outfit and felt super comfortable in it. Would I have worn it had Bekah not chosen it? Probably not. Would I wear it again? Absolutely. Except the heels. I rarely wear heels. When I do, they’re off in about 2.5 seconds (I took them off every chance I got). Also, stairs. If heels weren’t elevated enough, stairs add a whole new level to walking. Then there’s my roommate. She was at least two feet ahead of me all day. So, aside from the struggles of my unpracticed walking in heels, this outfit was great.
